IT'S TIME. . .
It's soon time for a BIG Birthday Party. We hope you all know you're invited. The 100 years Celebration begins at noon on Friday, June 29th and lasts thru Sunday, July 1. During that time, we hope everyone has a very nice time visiting, enjoying the entertainment, eating, and getting a big taste of Granville's past.
Due to many folks who are very generous with their time, energy, talents, and even treasures, much has been accomplished to make a celebration possible. To name the recent happenings: a song was written by Allen Thompson and it is posted on the granvillend.com website by our generous webmaster, Paul Robinette. It's a wonderful tribute to this community. The old school house is nearly done getting a nice white coat because Kathy and Don Nelson climbed the heights and did it. There will be a bell, too, thanks to Jo and Tim.
The plantings are looking good, with 120 plus red and white geraniums and many other plants put into planters for the celebration. The great ideas of Nancy Hoffert and Olivia Gotvaslee who were assisted by Akesha and Cruz Juarez, Jan Kelleher and Betty Trana made this possible. The VoAg Class and Jeff Hagel of TGU/Granville grew the geraniums.
There will be benches on Main St for folks to relax on. These were found in City Storage, repaired and painted by Myron and Linda Smette. Cleaning, repairing, and painting have taken place in the buildings to be used for exhibits. Omar Smith, Short HIllerud, Doran Hanson, MerleYoder, Cal Medler and Marty Malachowski have been using their many talents for this. Barb and Gordon Evenson have done many hours of making Burma Shave signs and old time Photo cut-outs. And of course, the General Committee for the Centennial has met many, many times toplanand carry out what is the forerunner of such an event.
The entire community has been very cooperative in replying to the many requests from the History people seeking information

FROM THE PASTORS WINDOW
THE BEAUTIFUL SPRING SEASON IS WINDING DOWN. THE FARMERS ARE ABOUT DONE WITH SPRING PLANTING AND NEW CALF SEASON IS COMPLETE FOR OUR RANCHES. SPRING IS THE SEASON IN WHICH NEW LIFE BREAKS FORTH IN SO MANY WAYS. FIRST WE SEE BUDS ON THE TREES, THEN BLOSSOMS AND LEAVES. WE SEE CROPS BEGINNING TO POKE THROUGH THE GROUND THAT WAS JUST FROZEN SOLID. NEW LIFE AND NEW HOPE ABOUND.
IT WAS DRY AND WE WERE WORRIED, WOULD THE RAIN COME IN TIME? IT DID, RAIN CAME TO WATER A DRY EARTH AND ONCE AGAIN HOPE IN A LASTING SPRING WAS BORN. I LOVE SPRING. I ENJOY THE PLANTING OF MY FLOWER BEDS AND THEN NURTURING THOSE FLOWERS UNTIL THEY ACHIEVE THEIR FULL BEAUTY.
I HAVE ESPECIALLY ENJOYED THE MANY LILACS THAT ARE ALL AROUND. I CUT A VASE FULL FOR MY LIVING ROOM AND THE AROMA WOULD JUST OVER TAKE YOU AS YOU
ENTERED THE ROOM. THEY HAVE A WONDERFUL SMELL. THE BEAUTY AND AROMA OF LILACS ARE LIKE GODS LOVE, IF WE LET IT, IT CAN JUST FILL THE ROOM AND CAN
OVER TAKE US IF WE CAN ALLOW OURSELVES TO BE IN HIS PRESENCES AND LET HIS
LOVE WASH OVER US LIKE THE SMELL OF FRESH LILAC. LIKE THE FRESHLY PLANTED
FLOWERS IN THE FLOWERS BEDS OUR GOD WANTS TO NURTURE US TO OUR FULL BEAUTY. WATERING, PRUNING, WEEDING AND LOVING UNTIL WE ARE FULLY HIS, LIVING HIS WILL FOR US. MAY YOU ENJOY SUMMER AND MAY EACH FLOWER REMIND YOU OF OUR CREATOR AND HIS LOVE OF US.
PEACE AND GRACE, PASTOR FRANK

Centennial News
As we count down these last few days before Granville’s ‘Celebration of the Century’, it is hoped that everyone will be on hand to participate and enjoy this time of reminiscing and community togetherness. With so many plans and so much entertainment, it will surely be a time to remember.
Has anyone ever wondered what will the next hundred years bring? Will Granville still be on the map? Will anyone remember that there once was a ‘Hanks Grocery Store’, or a ‘Pete’s Bar’, or a ‘Jones Hardware’? Will anyone recall the time that the Woodall house exploded, or that the Congregational Church burned, or will they remember when and how the McGillicuddy Center was built? Who will be the ‘keeper of the history’?
Do you take a lot of photos of your family and friends? If you do, be sure that you write the names of the people and the dates they were taken on the back, because if you don’t, it will all be forgotten someday. How many of you have old boxes of photos and have no idea of who any of the faces are?
History is such an important thing. We learn from our past, and try to do better in the future. Let us all work together to make the Centennial Celebration Granville’s event of the century. Let’s make sure that this celebration will go down in the history book as a huge success, and that everyone will remember Granville as truly the ‘ Friendly City’ - the place where fun begins and never ends.
Winners of the drawing from the Centennial Calendars have been Nathan Green, Kevin Neilsen, Pam Brewer, Karen Ellenbecker, Leonard and Marlene Larsen, Luann Aakness, Jon Bergstad and Janice Boutilier.
A lot of folks can't understand how we came
to have an oil shortage here in our country
well, there's a very simple answer.
Nobody bothered to check the oil.
We just didn't know we were getting low
the reason for that is purely geographical.
Our OIL is located in ALASKA, California
Coastal Florida, Coastal Louisiana,
Kansas, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Texas
Our DIPSTICKS are located in
Washington , DC !!!!
Any Questions?

JUST A THOUGHT. . .
WELL, I DID IT. I HAD SURGURY! I FEEL GREAT, LOOK GREAT AND HAVE LOST 165 LBS. AND ANYONE WHO BELIEVES THAT I HAVE SOME LAKE FRONT PROPERTY ON THE MOUSE RIVER. NO REALLY, I FEEL GREAT AND HAVE LOST 39 LBS. NOT ENOUGH BUT IT'S ENOUGH FOR NOW. IT WILL COME OFF EVENTUALLY. BUT I REALLY DO FEEL GOOD. NO, I DID NOT WEIGH 365. THAT WAS A NUMBER I PICKED OUT OF THE AIR SOMETIME BACK. I HAD A LOT OF PEOPLE ASK ME IF I REALLY DID WEIGH THAT MUCH, I DIDN'T. BUT I WAS WORKING ON IT.
I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET MY YARD READY FOR THE CENTENNIAL AND HOLLY'S WEDDING. GOD IS NOT COOPERATING WITH ME. WITH ALL THIS RAIN THE GRASS IS NICE AND GREEN BUT THE FLOWER BEDS ARE FLOODED. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO DIG A ROCK PATH AND THAT IS ALMOST HOPELESS. EVERYDAY IT'S FULL OF WATER. MAYBE I'LL PLANT FISH IN THERE AND LET THE KIDS FISH. WE SHOULDN'T COMPLAIN ABOUT THE WEATHER. IT'S DOING WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO DO. BUT ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. DONNY WAS DOING THE RAIN DANCE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MONTH. THAT'S ENOUGH DONNY. DO THE UNRAIN DANCE FOR AWHILE! ENUF SAID, JO

100 Years Ago
The average life expectancy in the United States was 47. That’s not a typo, that’s 47.
Only 14 percent of the homes in the United States had a bathtub.
Only eight percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost $11.
There were only 8,000 cars in the United States and only 144 miles of paved roads.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 miles per hour.
Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.
The average wage in the United States was
22 cents an hour.

The average United States worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2,000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births in the United States took place at home.
Sugar cost 4 cents a pound. Eggs were 14 cents a dozen. Coffee cost 15 cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month and they used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason.
The five leading causes of death in the United States were:
- Pneumonia and influenza;
- Tuberculosis;
- Diarrhea;
- Heart disease;
- Stroke.
The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn’t been admitted to the Union yet.

The population of Las Vegas, Nev., was 60.
Crossword puzzles, canned beer and iced tea hadn’t been invented.
There was no Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.
One in 10 United States adults couldn’t read or write. Only six percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.
Marijuana, heroin and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and the bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health."
Eighteen percent of households in the United States had at least one full-time servant or domestic.
There were only about 230 reported murders in the entire United States!
Wow, lots of changes in the past 100 years. |
