Granville Centennial News

Why God made Moms

The White Dot Café – the Stubbins House – the race track and fair grounds – the roller skating rink – the Hotel and movie theater – Indian Joe’s grave - does any of this sound familiar to you or have you heard these terms mentioned somewhere along the way?

These are all things that are a part of Granville’s rich history. Can you believe that 100 years have gone by – businesses have thrived and businesses have closed? Homes and churches have been built and exist today only in photos and memories. Generations of families have thrived and departed – those are just some of the changes that can happen to a small town in 100 years.

This summer we will be celebrating those changes. We will be reminiscing, laughing, crying, renewing old acquaintances, and visiting with family and friends. Time marches on, as the saying goes, and now is the time to celebrate the changes that we have seen and heard about.

June 29, 30 and July 1 are special days in Granville’s history book. Check out the schedule and Come and Celebrate with us!

Winners of drawings for the Centennial Calendars have been: Teresa Loftesnes-$50, Kevin Nielson-$50, Nathan Green-$50, David Medalan - $100 on April Fool’s Day and on Tax Day - Roy Gilmore-$100.

Check out www.granvillend.comfor pictures and more info. regarding the Centennial.

LAVERNE PERKUHN, FROM DEVILS LAKE, PASSED AWAY ON MARCH 31 ST, 2007 IN HER HOME.

LAVERNE WAS A SISTER TO LANETTA OLSON OF GRANVILLE.

OUR SYMPATHIES TO THE FAMILY.

BRILLIANT Answers given by 2nd grade school children to the following questions!!

Why did God make mothers?

       1. She's the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.

        2. Mostly to clean the house.

How did God make mothers?

       1. Magic powers and a lot of stirring

       2. God made my Mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts.

What ingredients are mothers made of?

      1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.

      2. They had to get their start from men's bones. Then they mostly use string, I think.

What kind of little girl was your mom?

     1.  My mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff.

     2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be pretty bossy.

Who's the boss at your house?

    1. Mom doesn't want to be boss, but she has to because dad's such a goof ball.

    2. I guess Mom is but only because she has a lot more to do than dad.

What's the difference between moms & dads?

    1. Moms work at work and work at home & dads just go to work at work.

    2. Dads are taller & stronger, but moms have all the real power 'cause that's who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at

 your friend's.

    3. Moms have magic, they make you feel better without medicine.

What would it take to make your mom perfect?

   1. On the inside she's already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.

   2. Diet. You know her hair. I'd diet, maybe blue.
Flowers & Butterflies for Mother's DayLOVE YOU MOM! HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!

JUST A THOUGHT. . .

WELL, I FINALLY ADMITTED IT! FOR 30 YEARS I HAVE BLAMED SOMEONE ELSE FOR MY PROBLEMS. FOR 30 YEARS I HAVE SAID IT WAS HOLLY'S FAULT I AM OVERWEIGHT. YOU KNOW HOW WOMEN ALWAYS SAY IT WAS HAVING A BABY THAT MADE THEM GAIN WEIGHT. WELL, HOLLY WAS MY FIRST. SO IT WAS HER FAULT. EVEN IF I HAD THREE BABIES AFTER THAT. EVEN IT IF GAINED ANOTHER HUNDRED POUNDS SINCE SHE WAS BORN. I BLAMED HER. WELL, I GES IT'S TIME TO TELL HER I'M SORRY. IT WASN'T YOUR FAULT, HOLLY, IT WAS ME! I'M SORRY! HOW I GOT TO BE 365 POUNDS, I COULDN'T REALLY TELL YOU BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW. IT JUST HAPPENED. IT'S NOT FROM THE LACK OF TRYING TO LOSE.

I HAVE BEEN TO EVERY DIFFERENT KIND OF WEIGHT LOSS GROUP YOU CAN IMAGINE. I HAVE TRIED PILLS, WRAPS, DIET PLANS, AND I CAN'T SAY THEY DON'T WORK BECAUSE SOME OF THEM DID. BUT I USUALLY GAINED IT BACK AND THEN SOME, MAKING MY WEIGHT GO UP AND DOWN AND UP AND DOWN AND BACK UP. NOW I KNOW THAT NONE OF YOU OUT THERE HAVE THIS PROBLEM SO LET ME EXPLAIN IT TO YOU. I AM WHAT THEY CALL IN THE MEDICAL WORLD "OBESE" AND I AM

JUST A THOUGHT. . . continued

NOT PROUD OF IT. BEING "OBESE" IS NOT EXACTLY WHAT I HAD PLANNED TO DO WITH MY LIFE, BUT HERE I AM. JUST BECAUSE I TAKE UP A LITTLE MORE SPACE ON THIS EARTH THAN SOME PEOPLE, DOESN'T MEAN I DON'T ENJOY LIFE JUST LIKE THEY DO. THE TROUBLE IS I HAVE A LOT HARDER TIME DOING SOME THINGS THAT I USED TO DO WITH OUT A THOUGHT, LIKE BENDING OVER TO PUT MY SOCKS ON. ONE OF THOSE THINGS YOU PROBABLY DO EVERY DAY WITH OUT EVEN THINKING ABOUT IT. HOW ABOUT WALKING UP A FLIGHT OF STAIRS? CAN YOU DO THAT WITH OUT STOPPING AT THE TOP TO GET YOUR BREATH. OF COURSE, A LOT OF THIS PROBABLY HAS TO DO WITH HAVING ASHMA, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, SLEEP APNEA, TYPE 2 DIABEDES, AND ATHRITIS. OK, OK, OK MAYBE I SHOULD JUST FACE IT - - I'M OLD & FAT.

BUT I JUST CAN'T GIVE UP THE HOPE I WILL BE ABLE TO DO SOME OF THE THINGS I USED TO DO, SOMEDAY IN THE FUTURE. SO I DECIDED! THIS IS IT! I'M HAVING SURGERY! GET MY MOUTH SEWN SHUT.

OH, NO THAT’S NOT IT. I'M HAVE GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY. THIS IS NOT A SMALL OR EASY STEP. FIRST YOU MUST HAVE MANY THINGS PHYSICALLY WRONG WITH YOU. WHICH I DO. NEXT YOU HAVE TO GET A PHYIATRIC EVALUATION TO SHOW THAT YOU ARE SANE. SO NOW I HAVE PROOF. I HAVE A PAPER THAT SAYS SO. THEN YOU START THE PROGRAMS AND DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS AND PROTEIN REGIMENTS AND ALL THE OTHER STUFF THAT GOES ALONG WITH HAVING THEM CUT YOUR STOMACH IN TWO PIECES AND REROUTING YOUR FOOD. SUCH A LOT OF HASSEL! IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASEIR TO JUST HAVE STAYED AT 100 POUNDS, WAY BACK WHEN, BUT, YOU KNOW, LIFE GOES ON, AND ON AND ON.

I HOPE TO GET HEALTHIER, AND SLIMMER. I HOPE TO BE ABLE TO WALK THE GOLF COURSE WITH TIM AND PLAY IN THE YARD WITH MATTHEW. I'M COUNTING ON IT. I SURE CAN'T DO IT NOW. I KNOW THERE IS A LOT OF CONTROVERSY ABOUT WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY BUT I TRUELY BELIEVE THIS IS MY BEST SHOT. AND IT IS TOTALLY UP TO ME. LIKE THE DOCTOR SAID, "I WILL DO THE SURGERY AND GIVE YOU THE EQUIPMENT TO DO THIS FOR YOU AND YOUR HEALTH, BUT THE REST IS UP TO YOU." HOW TRUE!

AS FOR HOLLY, AGAIN I'M SORRY, I WON'T BLAME YOU ANYMORE! I'LL BLAME ONE OF THE BOYS!

ENUF SAID, JO

FROM THE PASTORS WINDOW

WHEN I TRAVEL AND HAVE TIME TO SPARE THERE ARE ALWAYS SOME COMMON THINGS I ENJOY DOING. FIRST I LOOK FOR UNIQUE HOUSES OF WORSHIP, BY UNIQUE I MEAN ARCHITECTURALLY. I ENJOY HOW ARCHITECTS VIEW THE HOLY AND HOW THEY TRY TO EXPRESS THAT VIEW THROUGH THE USE OF EARTHEN MATERIALS. THE NEW CHAPEL AT OUR SEMINARY USE ONE THIRTY SECOND INCH THICK WOOD IN LARGE SWEEPING PANELS THAT VIRTUALLY ENVELOPE THE WORSHIP SPACE. ALL THE PIECES OF THESE PANELS COME FROM THE SAME TREE. IT MAKES A STATEMENT ABOUT GOD AS LIGHT, ABOUT GOD AS ALL ENCOMPASSING AND ABOUT GODS ABUNDANCE. THE FIELDS OF ART AND ARCHITECTURE AND MUSIC ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO GIVE VOICE TO THE SACRED THROUGH THEIR WORK, SO SECOND ON MY LIST IS ART MUSEUMS. the THIRD MOST POPULAR STOP ON MY LIST IS COLLEGE CAMPUSES. THE BUILDINGS, THE OPEN SPACES, THE PLACEMENT OF TREES, ALL WORK TOGETHER TO SAY THIS IS SACRED SPACE AND THAT THE PURSUIT OF KNOWLEDGE IS INDEED A NOBLE UNDERTAKING. THE SERENITY OF COLLEGE CAMPUS'S WAS VIOLATED WITH THE MASS SHOOTINGS VIRGINIA TECH. OUR ENTIRE CULTURE AND OUR WORLD IS BLOOD STAINED FROM VIOLENCE. WE HAVE SOME 250 PEOPLE MURDER EACH DAY IN OUR COUNTRY. THERE ARE OVER 7000 RAPES ON OUR COLLEGE CAMPUS'S EACH YEAR. WE AS A CULTURE OFFER A VIOLENT SOLUTION TO UNWANTED PREGNANCIES WITH ABORTION AND THOSE WHO CLAIM LIFE IS SACRED SUPPORT THE DEATH PENALTY AS A VIOLENT SOLUTION TO CRIME. I PRAY THAT GOOD CAN COME FROM THE VIRGINIA SLAYING. I PRAY THAT IT IS THE TIPPING POINT THAT CAUSES US AS A CULTURE TO LOOK AT THE ENTIRETY OF VIOLENCE. THE VIOLENCE IN OUR LANGUAGE, OUR ATTITUDES, OUR FOREIGN POLICY, OUR RESPONSE TO BEING WRONGED. THE WORLD, OUR WORLD, IS IN NEED OF A GHANDI OR A KING. WE NEED SOMEONE TO LEAD US AWAY FROM VIOLENCE AND TOWARD RECONCILIATION AND PEACEFUL RESOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS. LET US PRAY THAT IT MAY BE SO.
Peace and Grace , Pastor Frank

Our town is beginning to look like company’s coming…and it is! June 29-July 1. The visitors are going to say Granville is one of the cleanest places to be. If you have taken a look at where there are still some “sore spots”, please do what you can to help eliminate these.

Before this issue is off the press, the school children will have spent time and energy going through town to make things clean in observance of Earth Day. They deserve a big hand for all the service they contribute to the community.

If you’d like to provide the history on your home (original owner and date), you may contact the Centennial Committee for a $15. sign to mount in your yard.

The Celebration is not far off---keep up the good work; use Litter Bags in your vehicles and pick up when you see litter where you drive and walk. You all are appreciated for what you are able to do to make a memorable event.

Ole had a car accident. In court, the trucking company's Lawyer was questioning Ole "Didn't you say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine,'?"

The lawyer said, "Judge, I am trying to

establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the cop on the scene that he was just fine. Now several weeks after the accident he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is

a fraud. Please tell him to answer the question." "Vell as I vas saying, I had

just loaded Bessie, into the trailer and vas driving her down the highway ven this huge semi-truck and trailer ran the stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side. I vas thrown into one ditch and Bessie vas thrown into the other. I vas hurting, real bad and didn't vant to move. However, I could hear Bessie moaning. Shortly after the accident a cop came on the scene. He could hear Bessie moaning. so he went over to her. After he looked at her, he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes. Then the Patrolman came across the road, gun still in hand, looked at me and said, "How are you feeling?"

"Now vat vould you say?"
